▪️ The Gospel According to Luke 1:3–4▪️
“…It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.”
The Evangelist addresses his book to Theophilus. He also addresses the book of Acts to him. The name “Theophilus” means “one who loves God.” In the same way, each of us reads the words of Holy Scripture because we love God and want to draw closer to Him.
“Having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first” — these are not empty words. Much of what we read in the Gospel of Luke was carefully investigated and verified by him, as befits a God-fearing historian. We will see this as we continue reading.
Such thoroughness is important so that the reader may be established in faith and have a firm foundation for trusting biblical teaching. This is in harmony with the words of Jesus Christ: “dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock” (Luke 6:48).
The faith of everyone who loves God should have a firm foundation. May it be so.
