▪️ The Gospel According to Luke 1:14 ▪️
“…And your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.” (Luke 1:13–14)
The name John (Yohanan) sounds in Hebrew like “God has shown mercy.” It was like a ray of God’s mercy for the oppressed Jewish people. Despite the sins of people, God carries out His plan of salvation. The foundation of this mercy is the sacrifice of Christ.
“Many will rejoice at his birth” — many, but not all. If John is preparing the way for the Messiah, then He will come soon!
Believing people had long waited for Christ. Job exclaimed fifteen centures before: “For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God.” (Job 19:25–26)
And now this hope began to be fulfilled!
