And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

Zacharias did not believe the angel who brought him God’s word that he would have a son, and even a prophet. Of course, the human factor influenced him. It is difficult to believe, but we need to. Of Abraham it is said: “Who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations” (Rom.4:18).

With Zacharias the situation was more serious because he was a priest in service, so the requirements for him were much higher. “For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts” (Mal.2:7). But he should not have expressed doubt.

This is a lesson for us. Sometimes our doubts may seem reasonable. Zacharias also gave reasons for his doubt. But we need to trust God and His Word.
